November 5, 1988. In a middle class family in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar, the youngest child of the family came to light the house. Mother fondly named him Chiku. But his real name is Virat Kohli. His Punjabi father was a criminal lawyer. Mother was a housewife. Virat grew up very lovingly with his elder brother Vikas and elder sister Bhavna. He picked up a cricket bat when he was only 3 years old. He used to tell his father to play.

When Virat was a little older, his father took him to a cricket academy. West Delhi Cricket Academy started in 1998. Virat’s father admitted him there. 9-year-old Kohli was a student of Bharti School. He started cricket training there under coach Rajkumar Sharma. The first opportunity in domestic cricket is in the Delhi Under-15 team.

Virat was the captain of the Indian team in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. India won the title under his brilliant captaincy. He quickly got a place in the national team after scoring runs in domestic cricket. But he came and won, this was not the case with Kohli. The Indian team was full of stars then. So he was initially irregular in the national team.

Sometimes stars like Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh’s injury or sometimes Sachin Tendulkar used to come to the team to rest. But Virat tried to use every opportunity. Virat Kohli first caught the eye in December 2009. Then Sri Lanka came to visit India. Kohli scored his first career century at the Eden Gardens in the fourth ODI of the series. In addition to scoring 107 runs off 111 balls, he formed a partnership of 224 runs with Gautam Gambhir. India won that match by 7 wickets. Gambhir was man of the match at Eden. He gave the award to Kohli. And there was no looking back. Kohli made his Test debut against the West Indies in June 2011.

Asia Cup was held in Bangladesh in 2012. It was there that Virat was given the first vice-captaincy duties. The following year, Kohli got the chance to captain the West Indies tri-series due to Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s injury. For the same reason, he also got Test captaincy for the first time on the tour of Australia the following year.

Then in 2014, he was elected Test captain. After three years, Dhoni left the leadership and Kohli became the ODI captain. However, the captaincy did not affect his batting.
